On January 27, 2017, twenty-three public safety dispatchers from twelve law enforcement and fire agencies throughout Arizona and Nevada graduated from the Western Arizona Law Enforcement Training Academy (WALETA) in Lake Havasu City. The Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Course introduces the necessary skills and knowledge to work in a public safety communications center in a productive and professional manner.
The three week, 120 hour course is comprised of topics ranging from professional orientation and ethics, community policing, introduction to law, and criminal justice systems to active shooter, hostage negotiation, domestic violence, stress management and interpersonal communication. Graduates receive certification in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, Emergency Medical Dispatching, National Incident Management System, Association of Public Safety Communications Official and Arizona Criminal Justice Information System. All instructors are police officers and public safety dispatchers.
WALETA is recognized as developing and implementing Arizona’s first dispatch academy starting in June 2012. This is the tenth class to graduate from the dispatch academy. The Lake Havasu City Police Department would like to welcome Dispatcher Kial Melendez to our agency as the most recent graduate from the Dispatch Academy.
