On August 6, 2024, at approximately 2:43 p.m. officers from the Lake Havasu City Police Department were dispatched to Smoketree Elementary School in reference to school staff locating a firearm in a student’s possession.

The investigation revealed that the juvenile student located the firearm while assisting family with cleaning out a storage unit and wanted to show it to their friends.  There were no threats made during the incident and there was no live ammunition in the firearm or with the juvenile.  There is no current risk to the students or community as a result of this incident.

Due to the age of the juvenile, this case will be screened with the Mohave County Juvenile Probation Department for potential charges against the juvenile.  The school is also handling the incident with internal discipline.
