At approximately 7:42 p.m., Tuesday, February 27, a fire alarm system reported a fire at the Prestige Assisted Living on Smoketree Avenue. Employees called 9-1-1 shortly after the alarms sounded, confirming there was a fire in a stairwell light. Police officers arrived on scene and extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher.
The first arriving fire company reported smoke had filled the stairwell and evacuation efforts would need to continue. CERT responded and assisted with the evacuation to the lobby area. Four Engine Companies, one Truck Company, and a Battalion Chief responded to the fire and were able to gain control of the situation within 30 minutes. There were no reported injuries. Crews remained on scene an additional hour conducting salvage operations. Damages were confined to the stairwell area. The cause of the fire was found to be a light ballast.
