The Lake Havasu City Police Department wants to warn the community about a recent phone scam that has defrauded several local residents. One scam involved an unsolicited phone call from a person claiming to be a representative of the Mega Millions Lottery. The caller told the resident they had won a large sum of money but in order to collect the winnings, the resident needed to pay legal fees and taxes.  

Another scam involved a letter received in the mail from what appeared to be the Mega Millions Lottery Office advising the resident they had won a lottery prize of $1.5 million and a car. The letter stated that in order to collect the prizes, they had to mail a sum of money.

Communications from scam artists can sometimes look legitimate as technology has made it easier to copy images and logos from real companies off of the internet.  

Lake Havasu City residents should not send money for fees to claim prizes in contests or lotteries they have allegedly won.  In addition, residents are strongly encouraged not to share any personal information, social security numbers or bank account information with anyone they do not know.
