Detectives with the Lake Havasu City Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on August 31, 2024, in Golden Valley, AZ.
On August 31, 2024, at approximately 11:36 a.m., deputies with the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office were conducting a follow-up and attempting to locate a stolen U-Haul truck. Initial information provided to the deputies indicated that the suspect driving the U-Haul truck was believed to be armed and dangerous. During their investigation, it was discovered that the stolen vehicle was driven to a business in the 100 block of S. Cove Rd. in Golden Valley, AZ.
As deputies arrived at the location, they observed the vehicle and suspect. Deputies began to give the suspect commands, but the suspect fled from the business and re-entered the stolen truck. The truck then drove through the property at a high rate of speed. Deputies heard several shots being fired as the U-Haul was fleeing. A deputy fired his weapon, striking the U-Haul. The truck then fled on Highway 68, where a vehicle pursuit occurred.
Ultimately, the U-Haul truck fled to Laughlin, NV, where officers with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department were able to contact the suspect and take him into custody.
The suspect is identified as 40-year-old William Erwin, a Lakewood, California, resident. William was booked into the Clark County Detention Facility for possession of a stolen vehicle, unlawful flight from law enforcement, and two felony warrants out of Bullhead City.
There were no injuries during this incident. The investigation is ongoing, and the names of the officers involved in the incident are not being released at this time. It is standard protocol to have an outside agency investigate an officer-involved shooting incident.
