On Tuesday, January 5, 2016, at approximately 8:46 a.m., Lake Havasu City Police officers responded to the 3000 block of Hidden Valley Drive in reference to a shooting at a residence.
Responding officers learned that 50-year old Scott Mcweeney had been shot in the leg. Mcweeney was involved in an altercation with an adult family member and allegedly challenged the family member and told him “you better grab your gun.” The family member exited the room with the gun to diffuse the disturbance that Mcweeney was causing and also to allow another family member to safely exit the residence. The incident turned into a struggle over the handgun between Mcweeney and the family member. Mcweeney was ultimately shot one time in the upper portion of his right leg. The family member claimed he intended to wound Mcweeney to prevent a further assault and allow the other family member to safely exit the residence.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Unit were called-out to investigate the crime and conduct interviews. The investigation revealed that Mcweeney was the aggressor and is awaiting charges. At this time, no arrest was made on the family member that shot Mcweeney. The case will be sent to the Mohave County Attorney’s Office for review of criminal charges.
Mcweeney is in stable condition awaiting surgery at the hospital. All involved are residents of Lake Havasu City.
