The Lake Havasu City Police Department wants to inform the community about a growing nationwide trend involving the theft of Hyundai and Kia vehicles. This trend has emerged from social media posts exploiting a security vulnerability in certain models that lack a “push-to-start” ignition system.  Both Hyundai and Kia have released software updates to mitigate vulnerability.  Owners of Hyundai and Kia vehicles with a keyed ignition are encouraged to contact their trusted dealership to confirm if their vehicle is affected and the process for upgrading their vehicle’s software. 

Similar incidents have been reported in neighboring areas throughout Mohave County. However, this issue has not yet been reported in Lake Havasu City. We urge residents to remain vigilant and take precautions to secure their vehicles to prevent theft.

To protect your vehicle and reduce the risk of theft, always ensure that your doors are locked and windows are fully closed whenever you leave your car. Never leave your keys inside the vehicle, even if it is locked. When parking, choose well-lit areas to enhance visibility and deter potential thieves. Additionally, remove valuable items, such as garage door openers, money, firearms, and electronics, to minimize temptation. For added security, consider installing motion-activated lights and security cameras in areas where you frequently park your vehicle.
